![]() ![]() “Old Cars Price Guide” lists the current value of a ”74 Grabber at $260 for a worn-out “parts car,” and up to $6,400 for one in perfect, like-new condition. The two other Maverick models continued for 19, and in 1978 they were replaced by the Fairmont, a more glamorous car but on 105-½-inch wheelbase for all models (including two new wagons and a snazzy Futura coupe). Notable trim levels included the sporty 'Grabber' and 'Sprint.'. Three inline six engines were offered as well as one V8 option. The Maverick was initially launched as a coupe, but in 1971, a sedan variant was added. Grabber sales were down from previous years, so 1975 would mark the final Grabbers, with only 8,473 sales. The Ford Maverick was a series of compact cars introduced for the 1970 model year. The 1974 Maverick sales included 139, 818 standard two-door models, 137,728 four-door sedans and 23,502 Grabbers. But because some people felt that the basic Maverick was too plain, the 1971 line included a new four-door sedan and also a second two-door model: the new Grabber sport coupe with two-tone paint and decals to give it some pizzazz! In the ”69-”70 season, 578,914 Mavericks were sold, coming close to the nearly 700,000 sales of the ever-popular Mustang. Grandpa was a bit on the thrifty side and selected the absolute base model: A 170-cid six-cylinder with a three-speed manual on the column, manual steering, manual drum brakes, a bench seat, standard glass, no radio, no carpet, and no cigarette lighter. It was so easy to fix, Ford Motor Company promised, that the average owner - even a housewife - could do many maintenance and simple repair tasks easily, with the most basic of home tools! The base Maverick was rather anemic and under-powered but when Ford installed their 302 cui V8 under its hood it became a mean machine.
